The two communities entangled in conflict over land, Alavanyo and Nkonya for the past 84years have re-committed themselves to maintaining the relative peace being enjoyed by the area now. According to the traditional rulers of both communities, they are doing everything possible to tackle the conflict which has assumed a new and dangerous dimension of guerrilla tactics of killing innocent citizens in their homes and no more on the disputed land. These came to light when the Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Letsa paid a maiden fact finding working visit to meet the chiefs and people of Alavanyo and Nkonya in separate meetings to access the situation. He also used the occasion to appeal to both side to maintain and strengthen the peaceful atmosphere in the area to benefit from investment programs being earmarked for the areas by the current government. The two communities, Alavanyo in the Hohoe Municipality and Nkonya in the Biakoye District of the Volta Region have been plagued with protracted land dispute since 1923. The conflict has resulted in the loss of many of lives and property and has eroded peaceful co-existence, neighborliness and development efforts and replaced by rancor and war. Several attempts have been made by successive governments, religious groupings, traditional rulers and concerned individuals to end the conflict but to no avail but rather seem to die down and then resurrect. The Regional Minister stressed that development through investments will not thrive since investors shun conflict prone areas. He urged the two communities to approach him with their problems especially in situations or acts that might rekindle the conflict. For his part, the Paramount Chief of Alavanyo, Togbega Tsedze Atakora declared that his people will never object to any peace move and that they have obediently played their roles in ensuring peace. He said the conflict has undergone many peace processes under so many mediating committees involving prominent people in the region and the country but has not seen absolute peace yet. He disclosed that a new mediation team comprising prominent citizens from Alavanyo being led by Dr. George Afeti ,a former Rector of the then Ho Polytechnic and a retired Inspector General of Schools and that of Nkonya led by a former Jasikan DCE, Solomon Donkor are making efforts to seal the peace processes to ensure everlasting peace. On the part of the Paramount Chief of Nkonya Wurupong Traditional Area, Nana Kwadwo Asiakwah ,he also declared that they are living in peace. He said the area has already earmarked a- 640acre land for the establishment of the one district one factory policy. The Ankobeahene of Nkonya Ahenkro Traditional Area, Nana Ampem Darko who represented the Paramount Chief, Nana Okortor Kofi also re-committed the readiness of the area to concretize the relative peace being enjoyed with their Alavanyo neighbours since they are close relatives and friends. The Regional Minister was accompanied by members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Regional Peace Council members led by their Chairman the Rev. Monsignor Anthony Kornu of the Ho Catholic Diocese. Also present were a Peace Ambassador, Clement Djato ,a native of Nkonya and an Oil and Gas Expect, Ellis Prince Antsroe who hails from Alavanyo.
