In 1947, Nii Kwabena Bonney, the Osu Alata mantse, formed the Anti-Inflation Campaign Committee in Accra in response to high prices of goods imported into the Gold Coast by foreign firms. The boycott had the slogan “We cannot buy; your prices are too high. If you don’t cut down your prices then close down your stores; and take away your goods to your own country.” The boycott, energised the campaign for self-rule and Ghana's ultimate independence but the 1948 crossroads shooting was the catalyst.
