Northern Ghana Aid (NOGAID), an international non-governmental organisation (NGO), has expressed the need for Ghana to renew commitments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), by spending more on education, health care and food security.
Mr Mustapha Sanah, Executive Chairman of the NGO, who made the observation in Tamale at the weekend, called on African leaders to develop local solutions to all developmental challenges, to facilitate the achievement of the MDGs.
He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale, during the launching of the NOGAID 2008/2009 Annual Report and Financial Statement.
The Executive Chairman said NOGAID would initiate a 60-bed Millennium Women and Children's hospital project to enhance infant and maternal healthcare project in Northern Ghana to facilitate the objectives of the MDGs.
Mr Sanah said his outfit would also establish an Information, Communication and Technology centres for 20 disadvantaged schools in some deprived senior high schools and technical institutions in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.
He said NOGAID spent about 190,000 Ghana cedis during the year under review on poverty.
Mr Sanah said as part of efforts to support good governance, the NGO supported the security personnel in the Northern Region to maintain law and order during Election 2008.
"NOGAID supported pro-poor medical facility, Shekhinah Medical Centre to improve their free daily food feeding programme to mentally-challenged persons in Tamale.
"The organisation complemented government efforts by assisting inmates of Ghana Prisons Service with food to improve the quality of their feeding."
Mr Sanah said in 2008 the organisation under its, NOGAID-Doctors Worldwide annual Eid sacrifice programme, supplied meat and food package to about 3,500 families during the Eid-ul-Adha festival.
He described the event as the largest Islamic philanthropic gesture in the Northern Region.
