Lower primary school teachers and circuit supervisors in the Amansie West district of Ashanti have attended a one week workshop on the national language programme at Manso Nkwanta, which seeks to become the medium of communication for the pre-school to lower primary school pupils. It was organized by the Ghana Education Service and sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the District Chief Executive, Charles Oti Prempeh said Ghana is blessed with a fairly developed local language system since independence.
The use of local language in formative years of a child’s education can therefore be well harnessed to enable children of school going age to grasp the rudiments of basic vocabulary. This in effect will provide a sense of leverage among children from both the privileged and less endowed homes. Mr. Oti Prempeh noted that a child of six years whose inability to express or mention the names of items in English as a standard set for admission into pre-school could deny such a child of the opportunity for enrollment. However this situation can no longer be accepted if the policy of education for all is to be realized.
