The Speaker of Parliament, Mrs. Justice Joyce Bamford Addo
The Speaker of Parliament, Mrs. Justice Joyce Bamford Addo says gender mainstreaming has been entrenched in the country with the appointment of Women in leadership positions. This, she said are some of the tenents in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs.
Mrs. Bamford Addo expressed this sentiment when representatives of the UN Agencies in Ghana, led by the Resident Co-ordinator, Dauda Toure called on the leadership of the House on Wednesday
She said the Gender Committee of Parliament focuses on gender mainstreaming and poverty reduction. The Majority leader, Alban Bagbin called for closer collaboration between the UN and Ghana’s Parliament.
The Deputy Minority leader Ambrose Derry praised UNICEF for addressing the high mortality rate in the deprived communities. The UN Resident co-ordinator, Dauda Toure recounted Ghana’s contribution to the UN.
He acknowledged the role of the former Un Secretary General, Kofi Annan in bringing about Reforms and for initiating the Millennium Development Goals, MDG’s aimed at poverty alleviation and reduction in child mortality rate among others.
Mr. Toure was optimistic of immense progress made by Ghana in achieving targets of the MDG. He pledged UN’s assistance in supporting Ghana’s Parliament.
The UN Resident Co-ordinator lauded Government’s efforts at sustaining the school Feeding Programme, the NYEP, which are all aimed at building a better society. The UN Resident Co-ordinator later presented the 2008 MDG report to the House.
