Satellites get heroes welcome
Captain Andre Dede Ayew with Trophy

Newly-crowned U20 World Cup champions, the Black Satellites, received a tumultuous welcome when they returned home on Saturday night after conquering the world in Egypt. Thousands of football fans across the country waited for sevral hours to meet their heroes who beat Brazil 4-3 on penalties a day earlier.

"I was here as early as 6pm even though the team arrived at 10:45pm and it tells you how I love the team," Aminu, a fan from Nungua in Accra, told Ghanasoccernet.com.

The team led by captain Andre Dede Ayew was met on arrival by the Vice-President of Ghana John Mahama and some high profile government personalities.

Outside the airport, as the fans awaited their heroes, the sound of a powerful sound system blasted traditional and indigenous music at the arrivals hall which was thronged with fans of all ages.

Banners displayed goodwill messages to the players and some carried the photographs of their idols in the national side.

Mascots were everywhere clad in the national flag, which was even more picturesque with green, yellow and red umbrellas in the forest of people.

Thousands of people lined up the streets singing and dancing in celebration of Africa's first U20 World Cup trophy.

Some youths climbed to the top of trees in the vicinity of the airport to make sure they had a bird's eye view of the squad.

The players will float through the principal streets of Accra with the trophy and the double awards of striker Dominic Adiyiah.

The team will on Monday pay a courtesy visit to the Castle, the seat of government, to present the trophy to President John Evans Atta-Mills.
