Government is to review the Ghana Shippers’ Council law to deal with overstayed containers at the country’s ports, excessive charges by some clearing agents and delays in processing of documents.
This is to bring transparency in the charges and fee regimes of transport service providers in the country. Deputy Minister of Transport, Dzifa Aku Attivor disclosed this at the inauguration of the Volta Regional Shippers Committee and the Commissioning of the Aflao Shipper Complaints and support Unit of the Ghana Shippers Council.
Mrs Dzifa Aku Attivor,called on the Ghana Shippers Council (GSC) to work faster at eliminating problems faced by shippers. She listed lost or overstayed containers, excessive charges and delays in document processing as some of the challenges at the ports that needed swift attention.
Col Cyril Necku (Rtd), the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, appealed to shippers in the region to take advantage of the services of the VRSC and the SCSU to improve on their businesses.
He expressed the hope that trade across the frontier would now be more professional, competitive and secure.
Col Necku urged the security services to tackle armed robbery, gun running, drug trafficking and human trafficking that threatened security and trade.
Mrs Naa Dansua-Aryetey, Tema Branch Manager of the GSC, called for the establishment of a committee at Aflao to help resolve complaints of high valuation for imported goods, poor warehousing facilities, inland transportation problems and delays on the road due to numerous checkpoints.
