Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni says a law to ban female genital mutilation is to be passed. Addressing a gathering in the eastern Karamoja district where the practice is more prevalent, President Museveni said female genital mutilation is a bad cultural practice that has to be stopped.
President Museveni said though culture must be supported, it must be useful and based on scientific information. He added that last year, the UN passed a resolution that female genital mutilation violates the rights of women, increase the risk of HIV as well as maternal and infant mortality.
