The media in the Western Region have been urged to highlight issues that will sell the region to the outside world. The Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo made the call when he inspected facilities at GBC’s Regional FM station, Twin City Radio in Sekondi. He said the media in the region should come out with quality programs that will motivate and mobilize the residents for its development as well as attract foreign investors.
Mr. Aidoo said the time has come for government to shift from equity to fairness in allocating the Western Region its share of the national cake. This is because the region abounds in several resources which are used for national development. These include cocoa, timber, bauxite manganese and oil.
Mr. Aidoo is of the view that the Western region will continue to lag behind if the principle of equity in the sharing of the national cake is strictly applied since the region has a peculiar development problem. He expressed concern that most of the roads and culverts in the region are being damaged by big trucks which cart bauxite, manganese and cocoa from the hinterland to the Takoradi Port and called for effective measures to deal with the problem.
Mr. Aidoo urged district and the Municipal Assemblies in the region to focus more on poverty alleviation programmes in the short-term to bring relief to the people.
The Western Regional Director of the GBC, James Adeaba told the Regional Minister that because of high operational costs, the Corporation is gradually moving from purely public to commercial broadcasting. This, he explained will enable it to raise some revenue to service its equipment.
