Fishermen along the Volta Lake and the Afram River in the Eastern Region are being trained in aquaculture through the cage culture technology. The move is to help address the problem of declining fish resources in the Volta Lake 40 out of the 240 cages expected to be mounted will soon be harvested.
The Eastern Regional Director of Fisheries Samuel Manu, made this known when the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Kwesi Ahwoi toured the Kwahu North District and inspected some of the cages on the Afram River.
The project is supported by the Afram Plains District Agricultural Development Project under its Fisheries Resources Management Programme. He said the project is challenged by the non-availability of a hatchery in the area. Due to this, fingerlings are transported from Akuse in the Lower Manya District.
Mr. Manu mentioned poaching and tampering with the nets as other challenges facing the project. The Minister lauded the potential in the project and commended the supervisors for their commitment to the success of the project. He urged other fishermen to embrace the idea to improve their lives.
Mr. Ahwoi suggested the setting up of security post in the project area to check poaching. He also made a stop-over at Dedeso, where he inspected a kokonte and cassava processing plant by the Dedeso Women Co-operative group and supported by the District Agricultural Development Project.
