The love for music differs from individuals to the type that captures their emotions. Orchestra, described by some as outmoded western music has over the years tickled the imagination and buds of some music lovers and left perpetual desire on the heart of lovers of that kind of music.
The origins of orchestra music began in the 16th century. The basic ensemble consisted of four part strings, two oboes, bassoon, continuo and sometimes flutes. The 20th century however has seen a large increase in the number of percussion instruments, including many of Eastern or exotic origin.
Today, the term orchestra usually refers to the traditional large Western ensemble of bowed stringed instruments with brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and several players, one to a string involving over one hundred musicians.
Here in Ghana, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Pan African Orchestra uses mainly traditional instruments forming an indigenous African Orchestra yet producing similar soothing, peaceful and harmonious tunes.
The most frequently performed repertoire for a symphony orchestra is the western classical music or opera. However orchestras are sometimes used in popular music and are used extensively in film music.
