High girl illiteracy in cocoa growing areas
High girl illiteracy in cocoa growing areas
A survey conducted by the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare has revealed that illiteracy among girls in cocoa growing areas is high.  The  survey  further indicates that though 92 percent of  boys and  girls in  cocoa growing  communities  attend school, 56 percent of  the  girls are unable to read and  write.

The Deputy Sector Minister, Antwi Boasiako Sekyere disclosed this at a durbar to commemorate this year’s World Day against Child Labour at Dwease in the Asante Akim North Municipality.  Mr. Sekyere noted  that  the  survey was  conducted  under the  national Programme for the  elimination of Child labour in  Cocoa  which is being implemented  by his  Ministry to fight  child  labour.

He said funds are being disbursed to District Assemblies and non-governmental organisations for the implementation of activities in their approved action plans as part of national efforts to eliminate child labour.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Aniwa Wilson said the implementation of the  NPECLC has revealed high school attendance rate.  This she noted is contrary to recent media reports on the prevalence of child labour in cocoa growing areas.
