Security personnel, who would be assigned to ensure law and order in the Northern Region on voting day, have been asked to remain impartial in the discharge of their duties. They are also to maintain peace, particularly in volatile areas of the region to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections on December 7.
The Executive Director of Northern Ghana Aid an NGO in Tamale, Mustapha Sanah, made the call at the Kamina Barracks in Tamale. This was after he presented food items to the Northern Regional Police Command and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces for security personnel who would be assisting in the electoral process. These included ten bags of rice, 20 bags of maize and 30 packets of energy drinks for both the Police and the Military.
Mr. Sanah said detailed security personnel deployed for the elections should use the opportunity to reassess their institutions readiness to demystify the mutual suspicion between them and the public to foster mutual relationships.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Northern Regional Police Command, DCOP Ofosu Mensah Gyeabour, received the items on behalf of the beneficiaries. He promised that the security agencies in the region would provide maximum security to ensure peaceful elections. DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour said security personnel will deal ruthlessly with persons who will create confusion or flout electoral laws. He said peace in the country is paramount and called on individuals, the media and leaders of political parties to help ensure peace during Election 2008.
DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour commended the NGO for the gesture and said it will help to boost the morale of security personnel who will be working on voting day.
