The problems of Africa’s underdevelopment will be at the centre of discussions at a forum of African social movements in the Niger capital, Niamey. For the next four days representatives of social movement from the world over are joining their African counterparts to discuss among others the problems of global financial, food, fuel and environmental crises; the challenges of building democracy in Africa and Africa in world geopolitics.
Radio Ghana’s correspondent in Niamey says all is set for the opening of the forum as many participants arrive in buses from ten African capitals for the event. The meeting is the fifth of its kind to be held in Africa. The African Social Forum is part of the World Social forum.
The World Social Forum was established in Porto Alegre, Brazil in response to the World Economic Forum organised in Dovos, Switzerland every year by leaders and the big players in the world economy. The World Social Forum believes that it is possible to build another world economic and social order as an alternative to neoliberalism and globalisation.
