Adopt bio-security measures to curb bird flu- veterinarian

Poultry farmers have been entreated to adopt the needed bio-security measures to prevent a recurrence of Bird flu in the country. A veterinarian, Dr. Stephen Ocklign who made the appeal observed that, the recording of bird flu in neighbouring Togo recently, makes it imperative for Ghana to do all within its power to prevent the disease from hitting the country again. He was speaking in Sunyani at a day’s seminar organized by Agricare Limited for poultry farmers in Brong-Ahafo.

Dr. Ockling who is also the Deputy Director of the Veterinary Services Division in Techiman stressed the need for poultry farmers to step up surveillance to prevent avian influenza as well as other poultry diseases. He told the participants to uphold what he termed the “Look, Report and Prevent Strategy” by ensuring that they report any sick or dead bird to veterinary officers without any delay.

The Managing Director of Agricare Limited, S. B. Apeadu, observed that the seminar was organized to bring together players in the poultry industry to take stock of their activities and to position themselves to provide quality poultry products to consumers in Ghana and the West African Sub-region. He stated that the importation of frozen meat poses a major threat to Ghana’s poultry industry.

Touching on the general elections, the MD of Agricare says apart from asking the EC to live up to expectation, every Ghanaian should contribute his quota for the success of the elections.
