The Speaker of Parliament, Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi Hughes has stressed the need for Ghana’s Parliament and the US Congress to forge closer links and cooperate in sharing ideas on best practices in Legislative work. Mr. Hughes noted that unlike the Executive arm of Government which has established close ties with the Us Presidency, there is not much going on in terms of relations between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
The speaker made this observation when the new United States Ambassador to Ghana, Donald Gene Teitelbaum paid his first visit to Parliament since assuming duty.
On Ghana-US relations, Mr. Hughes said they have grown from strength to strength over the past years especially under President Kufuor culminating in his current visit to the US. He commended the US Government for its assistance given to Ghana to date, citing the Millennium Challenge Account and support in the Agriculture and Educational Sector.
Mr. Teitelbaum thanked Mr. Hughes for his kind words and said his visit is to introduce himself and establish contact with the Leadership of Ghana’s Legislature.
