The Northern Regional manager of the National Health Insurance Scheme NHIS, Hudu Issah, says  1,209,267 people have so far registered with the scheme in the region representing about 64% of its population with 9,000 people accessing free health care at various accredited hospitals and clinics.  Mr. Hudu was speaking at the maiden annual general meeting of the Yendi Municipal Mutual Health Insurance Scheme in the Northern Region.

Mr. Hudu said having operated for four years, it is appropriate for the owners and the highest decision making body of the scheme to meet and reflect on it’s activities over the period and assess it’s achievements and the way forward.  He reminded the people of the area that the issue of Health Insurance is neither ethnic nor political as diseases know not such barriers.

The Yendi Co-ordinating Director of the Scheme, Alhaji Mohammed Asibi Azonko said the scheme has since its inception registered 127,468 people with 90,423 attending accredited health facilities mostly the vulnerable in the area.  According to him, the bills paid in respect of the total attendance stands at GH¢1000.  Alhaji Azonko however said the scheme needs to step up registration since there is almost 90 percent coverage of the communities so far.
