A number of Ghanaians, non nationals from diverse backgrounds including Academia, business, politics, and the security agencies will be presented with national awards today. About 250 personalities will be honoured for their contribution in diverse fields of national development.
The Awards are in the following categories, Grand Order of the Star and Eagles of Ghana which is the highest category of Awards reserved for Presidents of the Republic, Order of the Star Companion, Order of the Star-Member and Order of the Volta Companion. The rest are order of the Volta-Officer, Order of the Volta-Member and Grand Medal.
This year’s awards have been fraught with controversy, with the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC, refusing to accept them. Some of the reasons they state for their refusal include, allegations of government’s persecution and witch hunting of NDC members, violation of human rights abuses, as well as the unresolved murders of the overlord of Dagbon.
The Deputy Minister of Information and National Orientation, Frank Agyekum, has however debunked the allegations maintaining that government is ready to honour them when they decide to accept the awards.
