Asante Kotoko after wrapping up the league, picked up silverware on Tuesday after beating Heart of Lions on penalties to win the President’s Republic Day Cup at the Ohene Djan Stadium.The Porcupine Warriors ended regulation time of the exciting and beautiful game 2-2 but went ahead to edge the Lions during shoot out scoring three from four kicks with Daniel Acquah, Nii Adjei and Eric Bekoe finding target while the Kpando-based side failed to score any of their first three kicks.

The victory today hands Kotoko a third victory over Lions this season after completing a league double over their opponents.

However, Heart of Lions did not leave the grounds with nothing but had something to cheer about as Dominic Adiyah, picked the Most Valuable Player award.

Lions finished the game with ten players when in the 24th minute Referee Kotey handed defender Godfred Rockson a red card for upending Kwabena Yaro, who was in a position to score the opener.

Both sides ended the first half goalless but back from recess, Asante Kotoko drew first blood.

A minute into the second period of the game and Jordan Opoku opened the scoring. But Kotoko, still caught in a celebratory mood were exposed less than two minutes after taking the lead when Dominic drew level for Lions.

With 12 minute to go and Kotoko jumped into the lead again with Eric Bekoe tapping in from two yards out from a shot inside the box.

Then, deep into injury time, Lions equalized from a spot kick when Richard Manu brought down Dominic Adiyah after the attacker had slipped the ball past him.

Substitute, Stephen Owusu stepped up to take the kick against his former team and he rifled a shot past goalkeeper, Eric Nii Baah.

But as the Lions couldn’t hold their nerve during shoot out as they saw all their three attempts skied above the crossbar while Kotoko scored from four attempts to clinch the President’s Republic Day Cup.
