The Kumbungu Water and Sanitation Committees have been inaugurated at a ceremony at Kumbungu in the Northern Region. The Committees are to ensure that water facilities are well maintained and to facilitate payment for water by the community. The Paramount Chief of the Kumbungu Traditional Area, Kumbungu Naa Alhaji Iddi was happy with the move by the Ghana Water Company to improve on the provision of water in the region.
He said his people are ready to support the development of the water supply system and will not do anything that will disturb its progress. Kumbungu Naa Iddi noted that nothing is free these days and therefore every body should be ready to pay for what he or she consumes. He however urged the Ghana Water Company to fulfil its promises by ensuring that water is available at all times so that the people will not refuse to pay their bills because there is no water.
The Northern Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company, Samuel Mensah said that the Tamale Metropolis currently receives about 43% of the needed supply of water. According to him only 40% of water pumped from treatment plant at Dalun goes to Tamale, while 60% is consumed by the people in the Kumbungu Traditional area.
The Tolon-Kumbungu District Chief Executive, Wahab Wumbei Suhuyini said the district is guinea worm endemic and with the expansion of the water system, the government is committed to connect most communities within the district to the system, especially those along the newly laid water transmission lines from Kumbungu to Tolon, Gbuilung and Nyankpala.
