The Police Administration says it faces challenges in distribution of personnel to the various parts of the country. The challenges include inadequate budgetary allocation, poor residential and office accommodation and lack of goodwill by the public.
The Director-General of Police in charge of Services, COP Yaw Adu-Gyimah who said this, however urged personnel of the Service to give off their best, particularly this election year, to maintain Ghana’s enviable record as a peaceful and stable country. He was inaugurating an office block for the Criminal Investigations Department of the Asokwa Police District in Kumasi. The project became a reality through contributions by some corporate institutions and individuals in response to an appeal by the District Police Command.
Mr. Adu-Gyimah noted that, while the Police Service is faced with serious financial constraints which do not permit it to provide all the requisite facilities and logistic for efficient operations, the public has also remained reluctant in supporting it with particularly residential accommodation for the staff. He said, ideally all police officers are supposed to be housed at the barracks with each officer having a flat for easy mobilization in times of need, but currently about one third of the personnel live in rented premises, which is an operational setback.
Mr. Adu-Gyimah commended the Asokwa Police District Command for its initiative. The District Commander, DSP Martin Ayi, said the command still needs about two thousand Ghana cedis to provide places of convenience at the new office block. He mentioned unreliable water and power supply to the barracks as some the major problems faced by police personnel. The Service later presented a certificate of honour to each of the companies and individuals as a gesture of appreciation.
