Ghanaian workers mark May Day
Today is May Day, a day set aside for workers to address issues concerning the labour force and also to remember workers who lost their lives in their quest for better remuneration.  Thousands of workers from various institutions are expected to converge on the Independence Square in Accra, regional and district capitals to mark the occasion.

The Head of Public Affairs of the Trades Union Congress Kweku Darko Aferi, says although the union has not fully realised its objectives, it has chalked up some successes.  He said for instance, the union has negotiated for workers on the minimum wage to be exempted from income tax.  Organisations that employ service personnel are excluded from paying certain taxes.

In an interview with Radio Ghana, Mr. Aferi said most issues raised by the TUC, are being considered in the national budget adding that the union is in dialogue with government to improve working conditions.  He called on all workers to fully participate in the celebration and to give off their best to enhance development.
