Black Stars qualify for quarter finals
Amazing Stars through to quarter finals is how the Daily Graphic captures its top story.  It says Ghana’s Black Stars yesterday revived the nation’s flagging spirit with a 24 carat display against the Atlas Lions of Morocco which guaranteed them a quarter – final birth.  They also earn a special presidential bonus in the tournament.  The paper shows, Essien, Painstil, Hans Adu Sarpei and Junior Agogo celebrating the stars first goal with the Kangaroo style.

The Ghanaian Times also picks the stars sweet victory as its sole front page story.  The picture that goes with the story says it’s a goal and players of the national soccer team hail their hero, Michael Essien after he had netted the first of the two nil victory.  Indeed victory is always desirous.

We move on to the next paper which is the Statesman.  The paper is also thrilled by yesterday’s superlative performance by the Blacks stars.  Going with the caption vintage stars tame Morocco atlas Lions in epic thriller, the paper says the victory yesterday has put back smiles on the faces of million of Ghanaians, thus ending the sharp condemnation heaped on the team especially Asamoah Gyan.

The Accra Daily Mail congratulates the Blacks Stars and their manager for the impressive performance yesterday that saw the Moroccans packing.  It says Nation building requires that the nation’s flag is supported either in foul or fair weather and this should be demonstrated in sports, music literature and other facets of national life.  The Accra Daily Mail therefore urges Ghanaians to stop the bad mouthing and rather psyche themselves up for the next round which will feature even more determined opponents.

The Statesman says as if by design almost all the major markets in the country are being razed down by fire with the latest being the Koforidua Central Market.  The paper says this incident exposes, how prone the markets and other public buildings are to fire and other disasters.  It says the fire Service sometime ago announced that it will carry a fire audit of all pubic buildings to ensure that, they are safe and accessible in the event of a fire.  The Statesman hopes this plan, like so many others have not been left to gather dust.  It urges the Fire Service to vigorously implement the pan and ensure compliance in areas where facilities are not up to scratch.
The Chronicle is worried about the non-functioning of some traffic and streetlights in Accra and other cities across the country.  The paper is particularly concerned about the situation at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange which it says must critically be checked to ensure pedestrian safety.  To the paper, the Ministry of Information and National Orientation and other government agencies should do more by keeping the public informed about situations in order to limit their criticisms.
