Ashaiman hawkers take over pavements

Traders at Ashaiman have taken over the walkways and sometimes do businesses on the main road. 

The situation has been a challenge since the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has over the years taken steps to stop the development.  

On Thursday July 26, in the morning a Kia truck with registration number ER5112X carrying cement block was spotted from the main road when it failed brake abruptly and run into the hawkers and some pedestrians killing one person on the spot. 

Six others who suffered various injuries were sent to the Tema General Hospital receiving medical care.  

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly embarked on operation Clear the street of hawkers this morning to make way for motorists. 

A visit to the market by our Radio Ghana correspondent Sheriff Iddrisu report that most of the hawkers absent with pathways cleared for easy vehicular and pedestrian movement. 

Some of the wares of these hawkers are seized by the city guards to ensure orderliness.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, The Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive Albert Okyere said the assembly is resolved to stop hawking on the main roads, but all have yielded no results. 

He described the incident as unfortunate and called on the traders to be compliant with the rules to ensure their safety. 

He said the Assembly has completed the construction of 500 sheds at Adjei kojo in Ashaiman and entreated the traders to purchase them from the Assembly to prevent future accidents. 

He noted that the assembly will not hesitate to enforce the laws, saying it’s a wakeup call to all in Ashaiman.
