Teachers part of falling standards in mathematics

President of the Ghana Mathematics Society, Professor Sitsofe Anku has attributed the falling standards of mathematics to some teachers who do not have capabilities of teaching the subject.

According to him, some mathematics teachers do not understand mathematics therefore do not teach the subject well.

However, speaking on GBC's ‘Uniiq Breakfast Drive’ Tuesday [July 24], Professor Anku said, "there are many factors that are allocated to students failing mathematics which includes the textbooks, the environment and students themselves."

He emphasized that, "students must read to understand mathematics and to relate it to things in reality."

Professor Anku said, he has developed a model called the Meagasa Mathematics Model which he said would help students to structure what they study and what the teachers teach which was adopted by other countries but unfortunately Ghana refused to adopt this model.

In addition, Professor Anku said, "since 2010, ministers of education came to him so that he can spread his skills in mathematics to teachers across Ghana but at the end he was not paid and all the expenses were made by him."

Professor Anku also stated that, "his academy has trained some teachers who are impacting in their field of teaching with good results but sometimes, Circuit Supervisors discourage them from using these methods they learnt which becomes ineffective."

He therefore called on Circuit Supervisors to also come for the training and Impact other teachers who will not be able to come to his institution.
