Back door taxes will increase financial obligation of Ghanaians - Minority

The Minority in Parliament has accused government of increasing taxes through the backdoor. 

Reacting to the mid-year budget review presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minority spokesperson on finance, Casiel Ato Forson indicated that making National Health Insurance and Ghana Education Trust Fund Levies fixed taxes, will result in consumers having to pay more for goods and services. 

Deputy Minister of Finance, Kweku Kwarteng admitted that the restructuring of the two levies will put some minimal burden on consumers. 

He was however quick to add, that it was a better option than allowing the economy to deteriorate and having to turn to the IMF for a bailout. 

According to him, the overall goal of government is to tax the most affluent while lessening the burden on the poor. 

This informed the decision of government to impose additional taxes on those earning beyond GHC10, 000 and importers of luxurious cars.
