Mandela’s sacrifice, devotion to freedom unmatched – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo, has described Nelson Mandela as the greatest African.

In a Facebook post to mark 100 years since the birth of Mr Mandela, he said the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary “gave us an example of sacrifice, of dedication to principle, and of devotion to freedom that is without equal in the annals of Africa's modern history.”

“When one enters that beautiful country (South Africa), the effect of the Mandela imprint is palpable,” he said, indicating that “Madiba might have left us almost five years ago, but I do not exaggerate when I say that it is thanks to him that South Africa is today a strong democracy, with active and working institutions.”

Nelson Mandela International Day 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918). The Centenary is an occasion to reflect on his life and legacy, and to follow his call to “make of the world a better place.”

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.
