NGO presents assorted medical items to Northern, Upper East and Upper West regional health directorates



Presenting the items to representatives of the three regions, the Programmes Manager of Basic Needs Ghana, Adam Dokurugu Yahaya, emphasized that the medicines have been delivered at a crucial moment in the country’s mental health care delivery when most hospitals have nothing to offer  to persons with mental disorders unless to prescribe for them to buy. 

He said the medical consignments have been delivered on condition that they are given to the end users with  no financial burden attached. 

Mr. Yahaya stressed that on no accounts should the medicines be sold out in facilities that are benefiting from the consignments.  

He said persons with mental illness are the most deprived in terms of financial strength adding that majority of them being found in the three regions of the north make it even more precarious for them. 

Mr. Yahaya pleaded with beneficiary facilities to stick to and abide by this condition. 

He urged beneficiary facilities to keep accurate records of every medicine distributed and  report back to his outfit for onward submission to donor partners. 

He mentioned that his outfit will embark on unannounced checks to find out how the medicines are being distributed to end users. 

A representative from Tamale Central Hospital, Gertrude Delali Kpesese, commended Basic Needs Ghana and its partners for such a relieving gesture. 

On behalf of the hospital, she promised to ensure that the medicines get to  the targeted group. 

The medical consignments were supplied by Direct Relief, an NGO based in the States, through a project called Ghana Respidal Initiative. 

The NGO is offering relief items including several millions of Psychotropic medicines to Basic Needs Ghana to support facilities it works with in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.
