Fishermen continue to use crude methods of fishing despite several warnings

The National Canoe Fishermen Council says it cannot guarantee the safety of some fishes that are caught and consumed in the country. 

Speaking on GBC's Current Affairs Programme “Talking Point”, a Member of the Council, Joojo Solomon, said more than 1,500 of its members are still using crude methods of fishing despite numerous calls for them to stop. 

Some of these crude methods include using DDT, Dynamite, detergents among others.  

He said regrettably the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Veterinary Service and other regulatory authorities are absent at the beaches hence giving these fishermen the leeway to flout the country's fishing guidelines to the detriment of the health of the Ghanaian.

President of the Ghana National Inshore Fisheries Association, Joe Kramo, said apart from the use of these crude methods, the fishermen also use pair trawling and unprescribed nets to fish thus depleting the fish stock of the country. 

He said unfortunately when the culprits are arrested, unseen hands and politicians call for their release thereby encouraging impunity in the sector.
