Clashes in Atwima Foase in Ashanti leaves three dead Three persons including a 13-year old boy have been confirmed dead at Atwima Foase in the Ashanti Region, following clashes between irate indigenes of the town and armed state security personnel yesterday. The Assemblyman for the town, Charles Forkuo, who confirmed this to Radio Ghana, also disclosed that about 20 other people who sustained various degrees of injury are receiving treatment in various healthcare facilities in the region including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. The town is still under heavy security guard since the eruption of the clashes resulting from efforts by the Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly to relocate the district capital from Foase to Twedie. Earlier, an eye witness, Owoahene Addai Mununkum, said the violence began at about 11 am yesterday after the District Chief Executive, Nana Okyere Tawia, officially informed the Chief of Foase about the Assembly’s plans to fully comply with a 2012 Supreme Court Ruling that ordered a relocation of the district capital from Foase to Twedie. This was in accordance with the Legislative Instrument that created the Atwima Kwanwoma district during the previous NPP government. Owoahene Addai Mununkum said this information did not go down well with the people of Foase, especially the youth, who became incensed and attacked the DCE, taking him hostage in his office for hours. Police reinforcement was however able to rescue the DCE to Kumasi, in the process the security detail opened fire killing one of the mob instantly leaving many others injured.
