Bolgatanga Regional Hospital in dire need of Doctors

The Bolgatanga Regional Hospital is challenged in its efforts to deliver efficient health care due to the lack of Doctors.

The hospital which serves as a referral centre to all the health facilities in the Upper East Region currently has no surgical doctor, nor a Gynaecologist.

This came to light at its Annual Performance review meeting. 

The Medical Director in charge of the hospital, Dr. Patrick Atobrah, said the hospital is in dire need of Doctors to aid health care delivery, and to cater for its teeming client base.

He said the hospital will need a minimum of 30 Doctors of various categories to operate effectively. 

He noted that the hospital is constrained and unable to fund initiatives that will attract doctors to the region.

Dr Atobrah, said the facility also has only one X-ray Technician and a Pharmacist, putting pressure on the units especially, the Pharmacy where patients queue for several hours to be attended to. 

The Medical Director of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital said the region performed poorly on issues concerning maternal health care.

He called for the institutionalization of innovative measures to reduce maternal mortality. 

Maternal deaths in the region last year, saw a significant increase from the 2016 figures.  43 of those were the result of haemorrhage and anemia.
