Scrape Special Petroleum Tax - COPEC, Transport Unions Tell Government

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers-Ghana (COPEC), today (Feb. 7) led a two-hour demonstration to protest the frequent hikes in fuel prices.  

Speaking to the media, the Executive Director, Duncan Amoah of COPEC called for outright scrapping of the Special Petroleum Tax, because it has crippled most businesses and brought untold hardships to Ghanaians. 

The demonstration was patronised by the leadership of the various drivers union and a section of the public with the usual funfair that comes with such activities completely missing. 

The demonstrators numbering about fifty marched from the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Adabraka and Kinbu and finally ended at on the Arts Centre.

The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers-Ghana, Duncan Amoah condemned how governments over the years have played politics with the pricing of petroleum products at the expense of the people. 

He said the reduction of the Special Petroleum Tax from 17.5 percent to 15 percent in the 2017 budget was simply a mathematical gimmick.

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Asaki Samson Awingobit, was not worried about the low turnout.

He said despite the low turnout, the group will forward copies of its petition to the Minister of Finance, Petroleum and Energy, Transport and Parliament.
