Some GBC Staff Trained in Social Media & Online Journalism In its continued effort to sharpen the skills of its core staff to make effective use of new media in their work, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has organised a training workshop for a select staff. The training held in collaboration with MTA International dealt with some aspects of social media in news reporting. It brought together about 20 selected staff, mainly from the Webcast Department (GBCONLINE), reporters from The Ghana Television (GTV), Radio Ghana as well as other staff of the Corporation involved in the creative and daily production of scheduled and feature programmes. The five-day programme was aimed at improving what is already in place as GBC repositions itself to become the go-to platform for news online and on social media. The lead instructor of the course, Nasir Mahmood, a volunteer of MTA International in charge of Social Media and TV Journalist for the Hessische Rundfunk in Germany gave participants an overview of the social media landscape, current trends, user habits and behaviours. He further took participants through how to identify audiences and target influences and what makes great content and how to generate it. He was assisted by Sheriff Owusu Head of Training and Development MTA Africa-Ghana. The training also helped participants to have a hands-on practice with what makes great, ‘clickable content’ and how to maximise engagement and to know what really motivates people to like, comment and share. They also learned Video-production for Online and social media platforms and what needs to be done to build a really effective content strategy. Having established in the traditional media, this training is to help accommodate the transitions needed to be a powerhouse in online and social media reporting and to appreciate the subtle differences. At the closing ceremony held at GBC Training College, Eunice Masodong from The Radio Newsroom advised participants to go out there and share the knowledge with others. The Acting Director of TV, Johnny Aryeetey asked the reporters to challenge themselves and make the GBC brand stronger and faster on the social media. He said, "technology has changed nowadays and it is getting robust”. Mr. Aryeetey further advised that "we need to believe in our own and be proud of GBC".
