Some GBC Staff Trained in Social Media & Online Journalism As the usage of the Internet and Social Media as forms of information is increasing minute-by-minute worldwide, The State Broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (GBC) has taken it upon itself to equip its some editors and reporters to be abreast with The New Media trend by organizing series of in-house training workshops. The recent one with emphasis on social media, has brought together about 20 selected staff, mainly from the Webcast Department (GBCONLINE), reporters, from The Ghana Television (GTV), Radio Ghana and as well as members of the GBC involved in creative and daily production of scheduled and featured programmes. The aim for the five-day programme was to show how GBC can establish itself early on as the go-to platform for news online and on social media. The lead instructor of the course, Nasir Mahmood, a volunteer of MTA International in charge of Social Media and TV Journalist for the Hessische Rundfunk in Germany assisted by Sheriff Owusu Head of Training and Development MTA Africa-Ghana, had the participants go through an overview of the social media landscape, current trends, user habits and behaviours, how to identify audiences and target influences and what makes great content and how to generate it, online Journalism VS Television Journalism. The rest are what makes great, clickable content and how to maximise engagement and what really motivates people to like, comment and share, and Video-production for Online and social media platforms and what needs to be done to build a really effective content strategy. It is expected that, "participants will come away with an understanding of the increasing importance of online platforms as news outlets. They will see, how reports on online- and social media-platforms are different from television reports. They will get to know the most popular social media platforms and how to generate clickable content that motivates people to interact". At the closing ceremony held at GBC Training College, Eunice Masodom from The Radio Newsroom advised students to go out there and share the knowledge with others. The Director of TV, Johnny Aryeetey, asked the reporters to challenge themselves and man the GBC brand stronger and fast on the social media...."technology has changed nowadays and it is getting robust ." Mr. Aryeetey further adviced that "we need to believe in our own and be proud of GBC". Story by GBC's Francis Edzorna Mensah and Mabel Annang. GBCONLINE ---DECRYPTED---
