Asante-Akim South rewards 24 farmers

The Asante-Akyim South Municipality has rewarded 24 farmers for hard work and their contributions towards the development of agriculture in the area. 

This was at the 33rd annual Farmers’ Day celebration held at Bompata.   

Thirty-nine year old George Boateng, adjudged the overall best farmer for the year, was presented with a tricycle, knapsack sprayer, wellington boots, cutlasses, wax print, agro-chemicals, a Radio set and  a certificate.  

He cultivated 27 acres of cocoa, 47 acres of oil palm, 10 acres each of plantain, maize and cocoyam, five acres of cassava, two acres each of coconut and pineapple and an acre each of tomatoes, okro and garden eggs. 

The Municipal Chief Executive, Alexander Frimpong, spoke of plans by government to ensure all-year round cropping. 

The aim, he said, is to increase production, boost food security and create job opportunities for the youth. 

He announced that provision has been made by the Municipal Assembly in its 2018 budget for additional subsidies on inputs supplied to farmers under the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs programme’. 

This move is to enable more farmers register for the programme to increase food production. 

The Municipal Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Dr. David Anambam, congratulated the farmers for their hard-work and sacrifices that have kept the economy going. 

He encouraged them to adopt best practices and heed to expert advice by extension officers for higher crop yields. 

He reminded those who received inputs under 'the Planting for Food and Jobs' package, to pay back any outstanding money in order to sustain the programme.
