Melcom Disaster: Management demands prosecution of collapsed Achimota building owner


The Melcom Group of companies said, they are very much disappointed in the state institutions, which are mandated by law to provide and maintain social order at all times for individuals, business and investors to go about their duties without fear.

Their disappointments stemmed from the fact that, the owner of the collapsed Achimota Melcom story building that have killed about 14 persons, injured over 50 people and damaged property, running into thousands of Ghana Cedis 5 years ago, is walking free on the streets of Accra.

Addressing the media in Accra, The Director of Communications of The Group, Godwin Avenorgbo said, “It is very disappointing that in the face of these obvious failures, the owner of the structure that collapsed causing death, injury and loss of business has not been brought to book under the laws of Ghana.

Melcom as an investor operates within the laws of Ghana and we expect that the same law should protect our investment as security and incentive for growing our business for the larger benefit of the economy”.

The support and protection that the local investor enjoys invariably serves as a catalyst to whip up interest in External Investor-Mr, Avenorgbo lamented,

 

He however, charged the state agencies to make public the investigative report conducted five years ago after the collapsed of the Achimota Melcom Building in order send the right signals to foreign investors in the Country.

 

“Five years on Melcom as an investor creating jobs in Ghana is concerned that not a single investigative report on the collapse of that property (owned by Nana Kwesi Boadu, Director of Kinsadus Company) has been released”.

Five years is obviously too long for any business house or entity which suffered such huge losses in human and materiel resources to look on helplessly while the inaction of state agencies allows the culprit freedom without any penalty to serve as a deterrent”.

 

The celebrated Journalist, looking very worried when delivering the statement over the long-loud salient by The City Authorities and The Police particularly, threw out the following questions,….“was the construction covered by a building permit by the relevant state agency? Was soil test conducted before, such huge 6 story building was put up? Was a qualified structural engineer contracted for the project? And, were the building materials used of the right specification and mix, with the hope that, the powers that be will act without any hesitation,
