Fire office commissioned at Bunso to reduce accident fatalities As part of efforts by government to curb fatalities and casualties due to frequent accidents on the Bunso road in the East Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region, a new Fire Station has been commissioned at Bunso. In his address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Owusu Twum-Ampofo expressed his gratitude for the edifice in the area and said, the Bunso highway is an accident-prone area and so bringing a fire station to the area was one of his topmost priority. He added that not only does the Fire Service quench fires but one of their core mandate is to rescue victims of disasters and that he believed that will serve the area well. He pleaded with the Fire Service personnel deployed to their new post to take very good care of it as they have one of the best fire tenders in the country. Mr. Twum-Ampofo advised the people of the area who hunt for grasscutter in the dry season to desists from starting fire in the bush and advised users of candles and gas cylinders to be very cautious when using as he said the new Fire Station does not call for negligence by the people. The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Edwin Ekow Blankson, recounted the accident of a two tipper trucks and a commercial bus at Bunso junction during his tenure as a Regional Commander. He said, if the Fire Service had been there at that time, a lot of lives would have been saved. CFO Blankson expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Interior, MCE and the Chief and people of Bunso for the various roles they have played in ensuring the materialization of the Fire Station. The Bunsohene Osabarima Abeam Brakatu Ofori Annikra, urged the service to intensify their efforts to educate on their mandate since the service do not only quench fire outbreaks. He also appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to have fire service personnel on their planning authority as the local government act 462 demands to ensure that building plans have fire measures. Osabarima Abeam Brakatu Ofori Annikra, added that by ensuring this, a lot of properties can be saved when there is a fire outbreak.
