FOGET questions sustainability of 'voluntary fund' to support Free SHS

Foundation for Generational Thinkers, FOGET, an educational NGO has expressed worry over the sustainability of the proposed voluntary fund to support the Free SHS. 

The Minister of Finance during the 2018 budget presentation to Parliament said government is in the process of setting up a fund to receive voluntary contributions from individuals to support the implementation of the Free Senior High School programme, and the education sector as a whole.  

The Free SHS has been fraught with several challenges ranging from logistics to infrastructure.  

But in an interview with GBC's Radio Ghana, the PRO of FOGET, Micheal Ackwerh says the move though laudable is a way of indirectly asking people to pay their fees.

On the issue of government absorbing the registration fees of BECE candidates, Mr Ackwerh said it is a good move but government must ensure that heads of schools do not use other means of extorting money from parents.
