Prioritise fight against maternal mortality in Africa - First Lady tells Parliamentarians

First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has asked the Country's Parliamentarians to prioritise the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa, CARMMA in their areas. 

They can do this by allocating the necessary resources for the required change. 

Mrs Akufo-Addo was speaking at the commemoration event of the Campaign in Accra. 

The Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa, CARMMA, is an African Union Initiative aimed at promoting the availability and use of universally accessible quality health service, including those related to sexual and reproductive health. 

Despite the tremendous decline in child and maternal mortality, the continent still fell short of the required rate of decline to achieve MDG 4 and 5 targets by 2013. 

Though some African countries made firm progress during the period, Mrs Akufo-Addo believes a lot more should be done as more than 70% of women and children continue to die from preventable maternal and child deaths.

The First Lady who launched the evaluation report from the week-long CARMMA meeting urged ministers, representatives from countries on the continent, to intensify their advocacy roles till no woman dies, giving life to another.

The report among others, called for the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation on the continent through a resolution by African Heads of State and Governments.
