THE DAILY GRAPHIC AND THE GHANAIAN TIMES DIGEST THE PROPOSAL BY GOVERNMENT TO REDUCE ELECTRICITY TARRIFS, AS ANNOUNCED BY THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, KEN OFORI ATTA IN PARLIAMENT ON NOVEMBER 15.

The Daily Graphic is excited at the move because it will make power affordable to Industry, particularly as recent production cost is worsened by high power tariffs. Although many commentators see the downward review of the tariffs as a fulfillment of another campaign promise, the Graphic sees it differently, saying it is a major boost for businesses and commends government for the bold initiative.

The Ghanaian Times on its part expects the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, PURC, to collaborate with government to ensure the reduction of the tariffs, as soon as possible. The Times is of the view that the power cuts have the potential to cushion most Ghanaians against some dire economic problems. 

The Daily Heritage is concerned about the absence of English labelling on some imported products on the Ghanaian market. The paper is worried that authorities supposed to check the anomaly are not doing enough to ensure that products with Chinese and other foreign language labellings are taken off the market.  The Heritage calls on officials assigned to these tasks to go beyond verbal warnings and begin to enforce the law on product labelling to sanitise the system.
