African Justice Systems no longer serve needs of average persons - Tanzanian Judge 

The Principal Judge of the Judiciary of Tanzania, Justice Ferdinand Wambali, has lamented that many people on the continent feel that African Justice Systems no longer serve the needs of average persons. 

He asserted that the fear of many people not being understood in the courtrooms is a key reason why many litigants turn to arbitration and mediation to resolve their disputes.

Justice Wambali said it is important to understand that quality, independence and efficiency are the key component for an effective justice system. 

Speaking at the on-going Third African Judicial Dialogue at Arusha, Tanzania, Justice Wambali emphasised that access to an effective justice system is an essential right which must be the foundation of democracy and recognised by constitutional traditions. 

He insists that nobody can deny the fact that everyone is entitled to a fair and public hearing within a reasonable time by an independent and impartial organ established by law. 

Besides, many States recognise that a well-functioning Judicial System also underpins economic development. 

Justice Wambali emphasized that an effective Justice System that interprets and applies the law fairly, impartially and without undue delay is fundamental to citizens’ rights and a well-functioning economy.
