Over 200 school children killed in road crashes this year- NRSC

The Director for Research at the National Road Safety Commission, NRSC, Martin Afram, says two hundred and forty-one school children were killed in road crashes from January to September this year.

The number represents an 11 point seven per cent reduction, compared to the same period last year when 273 children were killed.
  
The children, who were either knocked down or died in road crashes, were among one thousand five hundred and thirty-four road deaths recorded between January and September this year. 

Of the number 141 of the children who perished were males, while one hundred were females.

He said 402 of the two thousand one hundred and ninety-eight traffic fatalities reported in 2016, involved children, less than 18 years. 
 
Mr Afram noted that pedestrian knockdowns are responsible for deaths resulting from road crashes. 
 
He said the World Bank is currently providing support for a nationwide lollipop project designed to reduce vehicular knockdowns and road crashes.
