NDC holds unity/solidarity walk on Nkrumah's Day

Thousands of supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) poured unto the principal streets of Accra to mark Founder’s Day on September 21 with a unity/solidarity walk.

Some with placards which read: “We thank President Mills for giving us Founder’s Day”, “Nkrumah never dies” and “Nkrumah is the Founder of modern Ghana” among others. 

The NDC government under the leadership of late former President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, set aside September 21, the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, as Founder’s Day.

But, the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has tabled a proposal for August 4 to be celebrated as "Founders' Day" including other individuals believed to have played key roles in the attainment of Ghana’s independence and to maintain September 21 as a memorial day for Dr. Nkrumah.

Both days August 4 and September 21 are to be observed as public holidays, per the new proposal by President Akufo-Addo.

Nevertheless the NDC and several other Ghanaians hold the view that the move is meant to side-line Dr. Nkrumah and rather promote the establishment of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), a political party of which the NPP is believed to have originated from.

The leader and Chairman of the  NDC, Kofi Protuphy in a statement has  warned that, should President Akufo-Addo and the “élite” succeed in cancelling the September 21st as Founder’s day, of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the party would restore the day as such if elected back to power in 2020.
