Customs Division impounds container for under declaration The Sector Commander of the Customs Division at the Tema Port, Felix Mate-Kodjo, says the Division has put in place proactive measures to ensure clients act in accordance with the paperless transaction system to eliminate fraud and facilitate speedy clearance of goods. Speaking to GBC’s Obonu News in Tema, Mr. Mate-Kodjo indicated that despite the new system, some Clearing Agents still want to take undue advantage of the transaction to under declare cargo. A case in point is a 140 footer container with items worth GH¢60,000 in revenue which has been impounded at the Tema Port by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. The container which was imported from China by United Car Services and Sanaa Logistics Company as the Clearing Agent is said to have been under-declared, resulting in the loss of revenue running into thousands of Ghana cedis. The Sector Commander cautioned Clearing Agents and Importers to desist from cheating, since the Customs Division will not hesitate to haul them to court. The Importer and the Freight Forwarding Company will be surcharged to pay three hundred percent of the total duty, plus the original duty. The Importer now has to pay about GH¢165,000 as penalty with an additional GH¢55,000 as duty. GBCONLINE ---DECRYPTED---
