Ghanaian Science Teachers Meet In Ho

The 59th annual Conference of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers(GAST) is underway in Ho with a call on government and Ghanaian scientists to redesign the country’s educational system from theoretical teaching to a practical base approach. 

A Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Theophilus Ossei-Anto who made the call noted that the country has failed in its quest to be among developed nations in the world because students are trained to pass exams especially in science and technology rather than using their knowledge to solve challenges. 

Prof. Ossei-Anto therefore urged government and Ghanaian scientists to revamp existing structures to avoid teaching abstract but rather practical oriented courses which have the tendencies of improving the country’s educational system.  

This according to him will also make the country a science and technology hub in Africa and the world at large.   

The Deputy Minister for Gender and Child Protection, Gifty Twum-Ampofo bemoaned the spate at which the youths use social media to circulate explicit visuals of themselves into public domain. 

The Minister, who is a member of the Association, noted that the trend is destroying the moral fibre and discipline in the Ghanaian society. 

She therefore urged school authorities to use forums such as PTA meetings to deliberate on measures to curb the menace. The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa commended members of the Association for their dedication and commitment towards improvement of science and technology education in the country. 

He charged them to modernize their teaching methods to channel out professionals who will provide solutions to myriad of challenges militating against the progress of the country. 

The President of GAST, Thomas Arboh disclosed that the Association has presented a proposal to the Ministry of Education to create Mobile Science Laboratories especially in deprived communities across the country. 

He is optimistic that when it materializes, the initiative will accelerate science and technological advancement and in effect ensure the positive paradigm shift the country is craving for. 

The event which brought together executives of GAST across the country was themed, “New Trends in the Teaching and Learning of Science and Technology Education”.
