Asantehene charges traditional leaders to support fight against illegal mining The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has charged traditional leaders in the Ashanti region to cooperate and support the government in its crusade against illegal mining. He said chiefs have as part of their core responsibilities to safeguard water bodies in their traditional areas. Otumfuo Osei Tutu was addressing members of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs at their first General Meeting of the year. The Asantehene asked the government to provide alternative means of livelihood for Ghanaians engaged in illegal mining in order not to be seen to be deliberately depriving them of their source of income. He mentioned for instance, afforestation as some of the viable economic ventures such people could be employed to earn a living. Otumfuo Osei Tutu asked the Chiefs to come up with workable proposals for government’s consideration in finding lasting solution to illegal mining. The Vice President of the House and Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, expressed their concerns about the delay in the completion of the new office complex for the House. GBCONLINE
