Call for Haileselasie statue in Ethiopia

Former Ethiopian President Girma Wolde-Giorgis has suggested that Emperor Haileselasie’s monument be erected in front of the old hall of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in the capital Addis Ababa. 

The former President made the suggestion during an event to mark Emperor Haileselasie’s 125th birthday anniversary, organised by the Emperor Haileselasie Memorial Association.

The President was applauded after talking about all the contributions the emperor made to the country and the suggestion about the monument.

The emperor was overthrown in a military coup in 1974, which led to the establishment of the Marxist Dergue regime. 

His name was then removed from buildings and institutions around the country.
