Government says Free SHS policy to go ahead in September

Government says it will go ahead with the implementation of the free SHS policy with effect from the next academic year despite concerns being raised about funding and its sustainability. 

Taking his turn at the Meet the Press series in Accra, the Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said government has already allocated GH¢400 million for the first term. 

He said every student who qualifies and obtains between aggregate six and 24 will benefit from the policy.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh said instructional time will be altered to compensate for lost time in the academic year.

According to the Minister, a programme will be set up for teachers who want to go into educational management. 

The Ghana Education Service is also instituting an Education Inspectorate Board to monitor teacher absenteeism.
