Wreath Laying Ceremony At Asomdwe Park To Mark 5yrs of Prof. Mills Death

Today marks five years since the passing of Ghana's third President of the Fourth Republic, Professor John Evans Atta Mills. 

As part of ceremonies to remember the late President, a wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Asomdwe Park, otherwise known as Peace Park at Osu in Accra.

Professor Atta-Mills was a legal scholar who served as President of Ghana from 2009 to 2012. 

He was inaugurated on January 7, 2009, having defeated the then ruling party's Candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 election. 

He served as Vice-President from 1997 to 2001 under President Jerry John Rawlings, and  stood unsuccessfully in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). 

Professor Atta Mills is the first Ghanaian head of state to die in office. 

A Memorial Lecture will also be held in his honour on Wednesday, July 27 at the Atta-Mills Law Faculty, GIMPA.  

Meanwhile, a brother of the late President, Dr. Cadman Mills has been speaking on some of the circumstances surrounding the death of the President in July 2012.

He told an Accra based radio station that his brother was not treated well by his handlers at the presidency in his last days. 

Dr. Cadman Mills alleges that government treated the former President, in his words, "shabbily” after his death.
 
According to the late president's brother, almost five years after Professor Atta-Mills passed, government is yet to disclose to the family the late president's entitlements as an Article 71 office holder.
