Prisons Service gets nod to recruit 1000 personnel

Government has given the Ghana Prisons Service the go ahead to recruit one thousand personnel to man the prisons.

The Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia announced this when he inaugurated a thirteen member Ghana Prisons Service Council in Accra.

The Vice President tasked the new Council to as a matter of urgency address the water crisis at the prisons across the country. 

He said the prisons should be a reformatory institution hence, the need to make the institution comfortable especially with regards to accommodation. 

It is no secret that Ghana's Prisons are overcrowded not to mention the challenge with personnel to oversee activities of the institution. Most of the prisons do not meet current prisons standards.

Vice President Bawumia who was not happy with the conditions at the prisons charged the new council to initiate measures to improve the situation. 

He indicated government preparedness to provide the needed resources to that effect.

The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana and member of the Council, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong pledged their commitment to give a new face.

The Prisons Council has Most Rev. Peter Paul Yelezuome Angkyier as Chairman. The members include the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, Director General of the Prisons Service, Patrick Darko Missah, a representation from the Ghana Medical Association Dr. Frank Ankobea. 

The rest are Kwasi Amoako Adjei of the Ghana Bar Association, Yvonne Akakora Obuobisa from the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General Department and Benjamin Akonu Otoo of the Department of Social Welfare. 

The others are Senior Officers Representative, Samuel Akampare Akolbire and Subordinate Officers Representative, Dorcas Bonnah.
